Alta
Vista is a search engine that uses many sources to produce
its results. These sources include Looksmart, the Open Directory,
Real Names, and its own web-crawling spider.
Alta Vista does not provide a directory option, but does
offer a LookSmart search from the bottom of each page.

AOL Search
- AOL is a search engine that uses multiple to produce its
results. AOL's webindex results are provided by Google.
AOL uses it's own algorithm to resequence the Google results.
AOL will sometimes insert one or two top results from their
private files, then presents the re-sequenced Google results.

Ask
Jeeves - Ask Jeeves is example of a search engine that
answers questions. When a user enters a search term (or
question), Ask Jeeves responds with possible questions that
the user can ask followed by traditional search engine results.
If the user then selects the question that he/she wants
answered, Ask Jeeves then returns sites that answer that
question.

The Open
Directory - The Open Directory is a human edited
directory, meaning that all sites listed in the directory
are reviewed by human editors. How you rank is based upon
a secret formula that only the Colonel knows. Since this
human edited inclusion into this search engine takes more
than 8 weeks. Once there, it may take additional time for
the listing to be used by sites using odp data.

that is powered by the Open Directory; however, the sites
within the directory are ranked according to Google's link
popularity technology.

Lycos, the owners of Hotbot, are expected to transform HotBot
over the next few months to also use FAST results. Until
then, HotBot receives its information from four major sources.
Hotbot receives Sponsored listings from Overture. HotBot
receives its "Category Results" from the Open Directory.
If available, the first page of HotBot "Web Matches" are
provided by Direct Hit, which ranks pages based on popularity.
The rest of the "Web Matches" are then provided by Inktomi.

IWon is reporting a great many top positions from Overture
where the URL is associated with paid positioning.

* Looksmart Web Directory
Looksmart
- is a web directory that charges a fee for site submission,
and a Pay-per-Click rate. For $49 (prices may vary over
time), you are guaranteed to have your site reviewed and
(if appropriate) placed in Looksmart within 48 hours. There
is also a need to pre-pay $149 for 100 clicks per month
for 10 months, refundable if you cancel.

- receives their web results from a variety of sources.
Overture provides the Sponsored entries. The results from
the "Popular" section of Lycos come primarily from the Lycos
web editors, and secondarily from Direct Hit. In the "Web
Sites" section, results come from the Open Directory, Fast
Search, and the Lycos web crawler. The Open Directory powers
the category links at the top of the "Web Sites" section,
and also provides some web site matches.

Search - receives its search results from a variety
of sources. The "Featured Sites" section results are provided
by MSN's sponsors. The results in the "Web Directory Topics"
and "Web Directory Sites" sections come from Looksmart,
MSN's primary provider. To get a top ranking you need to
participate in the LookSmart pay-per-click program, so submission
occurs at Looksmart. In some cases LookSmart does not have
sufficient results, so Inktomi "Web Pages" results follow
and thus your "free" indexed entries may rank well. At the
top of the "Web Directory Sites" section, you can click
on a link to view the 10 most popular sites provided by
Direct Hit. The "Web Pages" section is provided by Inktomi.
